Mammotome FAQ
Before deciding on a test,
ask about anything that concerns you.
as well as preparation and recovery.
Not every lump requires the same test. Answers may vary with your imaging findings and medical history.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions before and after testing
are answered below.
Q01Does every breast lump need a Mammotome biopsy?
No. Depending on the imaging findings, the clinician considers follow-up, core needle biopsy, vacuum-assisted biopsy or surgical excision.
Q02Does Mammotome treat cancer?
Mammotome (vacuum-assisted breast biopsy) collects tissue for diagnosis. Removal may also be considered for some small lesions assessed as benign, but it does not replace cancer treatment.
Q03Do I need to fast before the examination?
Fasting is often unnecessary when local anesthesia is used, but instructions may vary with the method and your condition. Please confirm when booking.
Q04Should I stop aspirin or anticoagulants?
Stopping medication on your own may be dangerous. Tell the clinicians the medication name and why you take it, and discuss whether to continue or stop it with both the prescribing clinician and the clinician performing the examination.
Q05How much pain or scarring should I expect?
Although the procedure is performed after local anesthesia, pressure or discomfort may occur, and a small incision mark, bruising or swelling may remain. The degree and recovery time vary with the sampling extent and your condition.
Q06How should I adjust daily activities afterwards?
Light daily activities are often possible, but exercise involving the area, heavy lifting and bathing should be adjusted for the period advised by your clinician.
Q07If the result is benign, can I skip follow-up?
The pathology result must be checked against the imaging findings. Follow-up or further care may be needed depending on the findings.
CHECK BEFORE DECISION
Before choosing the examination,
we review three points.
Rather than focusing on the test's name, we explain why tissue sampling is needed, what alternatives exist, and what happens after the results.
- Purpose
- Diagnosis · Whether removal is appropriate
- Alternatives
- Follow-up · Core needle biopsy · Surgery
- Results
- Imaging and pathology findings · Next steps
Your individual imaging findings
are the key consideration.
