Starting Mammotome care
Breast lesions
are first assessed with imaging.
needs the same test.
We compare current imaging with previous records to assess whether follow-up or tissue sampling is needed, and which method is appropriate.
When tissue sampling may be considered
New or changing lesions
need a closer assessment.
Lesion size alone does not determine the test. We also consider its shape and margins, changes from previous imaging, and whether imaging and pathology findings agree.
A newly identified lesion
A new lesion seen on ultrasound or mammography
A change in size or shape
A change confirmed by comparison with previous imaging
Imaging alone is inconclusive
Tissue examination is needed to clarify the nature of a lesion
Imaging and pathology findings do not agree
Reassessment or further tissue sampling may be needed
HOW WE DECIDE
Before considering removal,
we clarify the purpose of tissue sampling.
Mammotome is not appropriate for every breast lesion. Other methods may be more suitable depending on the imaging findings and the purpose of the examination.
- Observation
- Follow-up imaging
- Testing
- Core needle biopsy · Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy
- Further care
- Surgical assessment · Additional tests
Examination and care options
We explain the assessment options
that may suit your lesion.
Follow-up imaging
Lesions likely to be benign are monitored with imaging at planned intervals.
Core needle biopsy
A needle collects tissue samples for pathological diagnosis.
Mammotome (vacuum-assisted breast biopsy)
Under imaging guidance, vacuum suction is used to collect several tissue samples.
Referral for surgical care
Referral for surgical care is arranged when indicated by the lesion and test results.
METHOD GUIDE
Comparison of tissue sampling methods
Neither method is always better. The appropriate choice depends on lesion location and size, imaging findings, and the purpose of tissue sampling.
Access through an incision
Needle sampling under imaging guidance
Determined by the extent and method
Usually local anesthesia
Hospital admission depends on the method
Discharge may be possible after assessment
Sutures and wound care may be needed
Compression and dressing at the insertion site
The examination, procedure and recovery may vary with the lesion and the individual's condition.
